You have one of these systems in your car if you have a 2004 or newer. This EDR system is like an airplane's black box. It records what you do and will hold up in a court of lae too.

I bet your sales person never told you what it is or what it does.

How do you get rid of it without disabling your car?

You don't - some if not most are part of the airbag control/deployment circuitry. One of the worst aspects of this is that law enforcement is able to download your data into a laptop if they have the skills and the proper connectors to do so. The data recorder has a limited memory and is triggered by some event such as an airbag deployment and /or a crash - it only saves data for a timeframe just before the event - I read in one of the car magazines that 10 seconds was what one of the car mfgs used. I feel that other things such as EZ pass is a larger concern - big brother could easily find out exactly where you are or went and what your elapsed time is between 2 points. Cell phones with GPS and Onstar pose much bigger concerns - and there has been much written about this lately. Ed

One of the bottom aspects of this is that law enforcement is able to download your data into a laptop if they mortal the skills and the straitlaced connectors to do so.
